A dog’s tail plays a big role in their overall appearance and breed standard. During grooming, tail styles are shaped to complement the dog’s natural structure, coat type, and movement. Here are some common tail styles owners may see and can ask for on their dog given the breed standard.

1. Carrot Tail

Carrot tails are carried straight out behind the dog, perpendicular to the ground, and taper slightly toward the tip. This style is commonly seen on breeds like the West Highland White Terrier and is often refined using thinning shears to create a clean, natural finish.

2. Docked Tail

Docked tails are surgically shortened, usually shortly after birth. Breeds such as Boxers and Cocker Spaniels commonly have docked tails, and grooming focuses on keeping the tail neat and balanced with the rest of the dog’s body, as hair still grows on the nub and needs to be clipped.

3. Flag Tail

Flag tails feature a long fringe of hair that narrows to a point at the tip. When the tail is held straight out, the flowing hair resembles a flag, giving an elegant and eye-catching look. Maltese dogs and golden retrievers are a couple breeds that receive this style by default.

4. Plume Tail

Plume tails are gracefully curved over the dog’s back with long, flowing hair. Breeds like the Shih Tzu are known for this style, where the tail adds to the dog’s soft, balanced silhouette.

5. Poodle Tail

Standard poodle tails are docked but styled with long hair that is carefully scissored into a round pom-pom. When the dog is properly stacked, standing in a certain position, the top of the pom-pom should align with the back of the head, creating a polished and symmetrical finished appearance.

Understanding tail styles helps owners know what to expect from grooming appointments and how breed standards influence the final look. Each tail style adds character and balance to a dog’s overall presentation. 🐾
